Long vulnerable post ahead but it’s Sunday so it feels appropriate to share. Some of you may know this already, and many of you may not, but I’ve been carrying a lot of emotions about Sun of a Gun lately. When I was pregnant with Aspyn, I took a big step back and trusted my team to take care of our spray tan clients while I handled things behind the scenes. I’m so grateful to have such a phenomenal team caring for our clients. Between pregnancy, family losses, and adjusting to life with babies, I’ll be honest: I let the business keep running while I did the bare minimum in the background. I stopped praying over the business as often, focused on my babies and a new business, and kept moving forward. At the beginning, God was at the center of my business, and I wholeheartedly believe He’s the reason it grew into what it became. At the time, I was dealing with a lot personally that hardly anyone knew about. After experiencing pregnancy losses, I was struggling with my walk with Christ and with nearly every part of my life. I wrestled with feeling unworthy, made decisions in my relationships from that place, and found myself self-sabotaging. On the outside, you may have seen success, confidence, and growth. Inside, my head and heart were in turmoil. I couldn’t see it then, but looking back, I feel like God used Sun of a Gun to bring me back to Him. I was working in Raleigh and hoped to build my business there, but time after time, I kept getting bookings in Goldsboro—bringing me back to my hometown for work. I’ll spare you the details because there are a lot, but I can name several moments when I thought, “This is a God thing.” I believe He helped me build Sun of a Gun to bring me back to Him, even if it didn’t happen right away. I used to pray before entering every home, asking God to help me do and say the right things with each client, to let them see Him through me, and to help my business grow. Business was booming, and I kept growing, brick by brick and step by step, giving God the credit along the way. I had some pretty incredible experiences in my spray tan career. I met some amazing people and had the opportunity to work as a Student Success Coordinator for Spray Tan Class, the only accredited spray tan training business. I brought home a trophy from Slay the Spray, the biggest spray tan conference there is, and reached some of my highest sales when it was just me and my best friend working what felt like 24/7 to keep everything going. Those accomplishments and that momentum came when God was at the center of my business. Somewhere along the way, though, I started taking the credit. It became about what “I” built and what “I” did. I can actually pinpoint the moment I started doing that because I remember feeling convicted. But I kept letting my flesh take over. I wanted the credit because, for once, it made me feel worthy—of what, I’m not even sure. Maybe approval. Maybe praise. I truly don’t know. A lot has happened and changed in my life, and if I’m being completely candid, I’ve thought about closing the doors, selling the business, or just being done. I just haven’t had my heart fully “in it” and maybe that’s normal because my heart is mainly with my family now. I’ve never felt comfortable saying that here or to clients because I didn’t want to lose business over it. Right now, I don’t feel peace about stepping away completely. I do, however, feel a strong tug to put Jesus back at the center of my business and trust Him to lead me from there. I’m forever grateful for every team member who has helped keep Sun of a Gun going. I would never want to discount everything they’ve done for this business or for our clients. I believe God brought each person into my life and this business for a reason, in the season when we needed them. As always, I’ll be transparent with you along the way. I won’t make any moves without feeling peace that it’s what God wants for me. For now, nothing is changing at Sun of a Gun.
